In a world filled with constant hustle and bustle, it’s easy to lose touch with the people who matter most to us. Maybe it’s due to geographical distance, busy schedules, or life simply getting in the way, but maintaining connections can sometimes take a backseat.

However, there are moments when we’re given the opportunity to reignite those connections, to rekindle the flames of friendship and sisterhood.

One such occasion is Omega Phi Alpha Convention.

If you are embarking on your first Omega Phi Alpha convention or you’ve been to them all, it is an exciting and empowering experience. As you prepare to immerse yourself in a sea of friendship, it’s essential to maximize the time for relationship building and networking. Whether you’re reconnecting with old friends or making new ones, crafting a compelling elevator speech, and breaking through your comfort bubble, this guide will help you make the most out of your convention experience.

For many, Convention isn’t just a gathering—it’s a cherished tradition. At this time-honored event, we come together from far and wide to celebrate their shared values, experiences, and sisterhood. It’s a chance to reconnect with old friends, forge new bonds, and bask in the collective energy of a community that uplifts and supports one another.

As you arrive at the convention venue, there’s an unmistakable buzz of excitement in the air. Hugs, laughter, and joyful exclamations fill the space as familiar faces are reunited once again. For some, it’s been months since they last saw each other; for others, even longer. But regardless of the time that has passed, the warmth and affection shared among us remains unchanged.

Here are five tips for reconnecting and building relationships at Convention:

1. Reconnecting with old friends

OPhiA conventions are like reunions, bringing together sisters from different chapters and years. Before Convention begins, reach out to folks you’re eager to reconnect with. Send them a message expressing your excitement about seeing them and suggest scheduling a time to catch up. By planning ahead, you can ensure that you make the most of your time together and avoid missing opportunities to reconnect amidst the busy schedule of convention.

2. Making New Friends

While reconnecting with old friends is rewarding, Convention also offers the perfect opportunity to expand your network. Begin by taking a look at the Convention schedule. Make an effort to attend the Welcome Gathering and Sisterhood events on Thursday, the first day of Convention. You’ll meet members from across the country and begin building new relationships with members you can continue to connect with for the rest of Convention.

Approach new faces with an open mind and a friendly demeanor. Strike up conversations by asking about their chapter, experiences, and interests. Remember to listen actively, and be open to finding common ground.

3. Crafting Your Elevator Speech

An elevator speech is a concise and engaging introduction that allows you to share who you are, what you do, and what makes you unique. Crafting a compelling elevator speech is crucial for making a lasting impression during events.

Keep your speech brief, focusing on key aspects of your OPhiA journey, personal accomplishments, and aspirations. Practice delivering it with confidence and enthusiasm. Be genuine and authentic, allowing your passion for sisterhood to shine through. A well-crafted elevator speech will make you memorable and facilitate meaningful conversations.

4. Breaking Through Your Comfort Bubble

While it’s natural to gravitate toward familiar faces, pushing past your comfort bubble is essential for personal and professional growth. Challenge yourself to attend events where you may not know many people, and actively seek out opportunities to engage with members from different chapters.

Initiate conversations with those outside your immediate circle and be open to diverse perspectives. Participate in group activities and workshops that align with your interests but may push you out of your comfort zone. Embracing discomfort is a powerful way to broaden your horizons and foster lifelong connections.

5. Be Present and Engaged

Make a conscious effort to be present and engaged during Convention. Put away distractions, such as your phone or other electronic devices, and focus on actively participating in conversations and activities. Show genuine interest in what other members have to say, listen attentively, and be open to sharing your own experiences and insights. By being fully present and engaged, you’ll create opportunities for meaningful connections and memorable interactions.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your time at Convention and connect in a meaningful and impactful way. Remember that Convention is not just a gathering—it’s a valuable opportunity to strengthen bonds, foster connections, and celebrate the sisterhood that unites you with our hive.

By approaching Convention with an open mind, honing your networking skills, and embracing new opportunities, you’ll make the most of this empowering experience. The bonds formed at Convention can last a lifetime, enriching your OPhiA experience and leaving you with cherished memories and a network of incredible bees.
