At Convention 2024, the Board of Directors proudly announced our newest initiative, The Helping Hands Fund, born from alumni discussions on Facebook. This program enables dedicated alumni to contribute funds aimed at supporting current active members in covering their national dues. Alumni are encouraged to donate any amount they can, which will be pooled into the fund.
The Helping Hands Fund addresses a growing concern of reduced dues revenue due to an increase in dues waivers submitted by active members. By allowing dedicated alumni to donate any amount they choose, the fund aims to mitigate this revenue deficit. Alumni can also opt to be paired with an active member to provide personal encouragement and support throughout their collegiate membership.
Many of our members experience financial hardship throughout their time as an active collegiate member. They typically apply for local and national dues waivers to offset the cost of membership in Omega Phi Alpha. Members are only able to take 4 dues waivers across their time as an active, and sometimes they do not meet all requirements to be granted a full dues waiver.
The primary purpose of the Helping Hands Fund is to alleviate financial burdens for active members who may face economic challenges, allowing them to continue their participation in Omega Phi Alpha by covering their national dues. Managed by the national team, these donated funds will directly support active members in need, thereby sustaining the sorority’s ability to maintain its current level of events and support for its members. The fund will be disbursed by the national team specifically to assist eligible members with their dues, fostering inclusivity and continuity within Omega Phi Alpha.
