OPA Programs
Service
Our mission is to encourage a life-long commitment to service. A large percentage of our service program is carried out at the active level through the university chapters. Service projects are completed at district events, the national convention, by individual members of the sorority, and largely at host campuses and communities of Omega Phi Alpha chapters. Chapters choose their projects based on guidelines set forth by the organization. Chapters are to complete projects that benefit the university community, the community at large, the sisters of the sorority, and the nations of the world. In addition, they will complete projects that target the national permanent project which is Mental Health as well as the President’s project which the national president identifies each year. Past president’s projects have included women’s health, breast cancer awareness, childhood illnesses, domestic violence, alcoholism awareness, HIV/AIDS awareness, and education.
Though much of the service program is carried out at the active level, many sisters go on to truly live out the mission of “life-long” service. Through alumnae chapter activities to their own selected personal missions. Omega Phi Alpha sisters continue to make an impact in their communities long past graduation.
Leadership
We promote the development of service-minded leaders through the Omega Phi Alpha sisterhood. Every member has a leadership role to play. While actives, all sisters have the opportunity to help lead the organization by either holding an elected office, volunteering to chair a committee, or by simply being an ambassador and role model to their university community in the name of Omega Phi Alpha. Actives are leaders to future members by living by the standards of OPA.
Leadership training opportunities abound through national and district workshops, through programs offered by the university, and through participating in the organization at the national level. Strong leadership skills such as planning, communicating, delegating, motivating, and managing are skills that sisters learn by being in Omega Phi Alpha. They also learn to be tolerant, patient, understanding, and cooperative. These are all qualities that will take them far in their future endeavors. The experiences sisters have as actives and as alumnae will make them leaders in their communities and in their careers.
Membership
The pledging process is the first step in becoming a life-long member of Omega Phi Alpha. Through the initiation process, sisters begin developing their leadership skills and learn the history and traditions of the Omega Phi Alpha. Through close guidance from their active sisters, pledges learn to truly understand and to live by the cardinal principles of Friendship, Leadership, and Service.
Another avenue to membership is through colonization. Omega Phi Alpha has experienced tremendous growth throughout the recent years and this is due in part by sisters who move to universities that do not have an OPA chapter, local service organizations looking to affiliate with a national organization, and through individuals who are seeking an organization that stands by the principles of friendship, leadership, and service. Those interested in colonizing an OPA chapter are encouraged to review the “how to start a new OPA chapter” section and contact the Vice President of Expansions.
